The Fiji Police Force has carried out its responsibility under the current law, and the seizure of almost 8,000 suspected cannabis plants demonstrates the capability of law enforcement and the importance of community cooperation in addressing illegal activity.
However, this operation also highlights a much bigger national conversation Fiji cannot avoid.
The same plant being destroyed today is the same plant Government is exploring as a future medicinal cannabis export opportunity.
That creates a policy crossroads.
Police are required to enforce existing legislation. But as Fiji moves towards possible cannabis industry reform, policymakers must address the transition between prohibition and regulation.
The key questions are:
How will existing growers be treated if laws change in the future?
Will local farmers and iTaukei landowners have a pathway into a legal industry?
Will Fiji's future cannabis framework protect communities who have carried the risks under the current system?
This is not a criticism of the Fiji Police Force. Law enforcement agencies operate within the laws created by Parliament.
The real question belongs to policymakers:
If cannabis can become a legitimate economic opportunity tomorrow, how do we ensure that today's enforcement approach does not leave ordinary Fijians permanently behind?
A successful reform process must consider not only investment and exports, but also justice, livelihoods, education and community inclusion.
Fiji has an opportunity to design a system that protects public safety while creating a fair pathway for participation.
Because the future of cannabis policy is not only about the plant.
It is about the people connected to it.
