National Geographic Reinforces the Need for a Science-Based Conversation on Cannabis

The recent National Geographic article on cannabis reflects an important shift in the global conversation: cannabis should be understood through rigorous scientific research rather than assumptions shaped by decades of limited evidence.

The article explains that decades of legal restrictions limited cannabis research, leaving important gaps in scientific knowledge. As research expands in countries where restrictions have eased, scientists are gaining a clearer understanding of both the potential therapeutic benefits and the genuine risks associated with cannabis.

Importantly, the article does not portray cannabis as either completely safe or universally harmful. Instead, it acknowledges that cannabis has demonstrated therapeutic value for some medical conditions, while also recognising that evidence remains stronger for some uses than others and that potential risks deserve careful attention.

Cannabis Fiji shares this commitment to honesty. We acknowledge that cannabis is not suitable for everyone. Like many medicines and psychoactive substances, it can carry risks — particularly for young people, vulnerable individuals, and when used irresponsibly or in high-potency forms. These risks should never be ignored or dismissed.

At the same time, understanding both the benefits and the risks requires continued scientific research. The more reliable evidence that becomes available, the better equipped policymakers, healthcare professionals, patients, and the public will be to make informed decisions.

For Cannabis Fiji, this reinforces an important principle: public policy should be guided by credible scientific evidence, public health considerations, and open discussion.

While the National Geographic article does not advocate for any particular legal framework, it highlights the value of expanding high-quality cannabis research. Cannabis Fiji believes that evidence generated through this research should play a central role in informing future policy discussions in Fiji.
